New State Police Headquarters & Barracks
New Jersey Turnpike Authority
Garden State Parkway Division

This new 33,000 SF two story facility consists of the Troop ‘E’ Headquarters on the Second Floor and the Barracks on the First Floor. This building has been designed with security in mind. By utilizing compartmentalization and technology, the building limits access from one area to another to authorized personnel only. The site has been designed based on DOD standoff distances etc.

The barracks consist of processing area and interview rooms, along with holding cells for male and females. The second floor consists of all administration areas necessary for the operations of the Troop. Shared spaces include lockers and shower facilities for men and women along with a fitness center equipped with state of the art equipment. The building is completely handicapped accessible on both floors and ample storage throughout.

This facility completed construction in 2009.

Additions and Renovations

Hurffville Substation

The existing facility was 4, 980 square feet and lacks adequate space for bunkrooms and showers. This facility also did not have a meeting/training room. We added a small 1,518 square foot addition off the back of the house side of the building. The left side of the building was the existing lounge area, bathrooms and one office. This area was renovated into male and female bunkrooms. Barrier free compliant toilet rooms with showers were added. The displaced office was relocated behind the bunkrooms. A new meeting/training room and a relocated kitchen were moved to the rear of the building and is partially housed in the new addition area.

The front and rear bay doors were replaced with larger door units and a brick facade was added to enable this building to fit in with the rest of the other buildings in the districts. A new pitch pre-manufactured wood truss roof was constructed over the entire portion of the old building, as well as to incorporate the new addition area. The parking lot was resurfaced and relined and new site lighting will be added to the far right of the parking area to help light dark areas. The construction cost for this building was 1.4 million dollars. This facility completed construction in 2008.

The New Firehouse for Parsippany Fire District #5
Parsippany, New Jersey

Robbie Conley, Architect
Project Completed: 2009

Robbie Conley Architect, LLC

Robbie Conley, Architect was contracted by the Parsippany Fire District #5 to perform a study in order to evaluate the condition of their existing station. After the study was complete, the district decided the best solution for them was to construct a new building.

RCA designed a new 13,000 square foot building that will house four engines with ample ceiling height for maintenance of the apparatus. The bay is fixed in the front of the building surrounded by the radio room and laundry room to allow for easy response prior to a call and more proficient clean-up afterwards. From the bay, you can access the first floor with its operation areas such as, the decontamination room, maintenance room and storage area. This floor also contains the ready room, kitchen area and locker rooms.

The second floor may either be accessed through the main entrance, by way of the stair tower, or through the bay, which will lead you to a mezzanine area open to the bay below. This mezzanine extends to the administrative space as well as the bunk rooms with an adjoining small kitchenette area. Ample storage is strategically placed throughout the building to meet the fire districts growing needs.

This building was designed in cooperation with the Parsippany Fire District #5 to ensure that the most efficient, cost effective solution, for them, was created. This building incorporates all of the Districts needs with RCA’s design knowledge to create a beautiful solution.

Camden County, New Jersey

Robbie Conley, Architect was contracted by the Pine Hill Fire Department to conduct programming and a needs assessment study of their existing building. The deficiencies of the building were reported and numerous design solutions and cost analyses were presented to the representatives of the department. Robbie Conley, Architect was eventually awarded the contract to develop the design for the renovations and addition to the station.

The station renovations expanded the operations section of the building from three bays to six bays, while providing much needed additional storage space for equipment. Also, the department gained living space as well as a large administrative area. A substantial exterior renovation is included in the project as well.

Robbie Conley, Architect conducted numerous meetings with the members of the fire department building committee to make certain that all of the needs of the department were being met, as well as meeting with the Planning Board and other regulatory agencies, to ensure that this project was a success.

New Fire Headquarters
Galloway Twp. New Jersey

This new 8,000 plus SF facility is in the design phase and slated for construction in 2007. This building will consist of three apparatus bays, that are double depth and pull through. The house area will consist of a firefighter’s lounge, kitchen, and locker/shower facilities for both men and women. Also included are training /meeting room, offices, and ample storage throughout. Adjacent to the bays is planned a cascade room with SCBA maintenance area and storage. A separate work area is also provided.

Preliminary Cost Estimates bring this facility at around $1 million for the entire project.

Some of the challenges to this project include the property being located in the New Jersey Pinelands Preservation District. In addition, this site is located on State Highway Route 30. We have developed a design, which will bring the apparatus out on a side street to access the highway instead of pulling directly onto the main corridor. This allows for safer egress and ingress to the site for both volunteers responding to the station and the apparatus responding to alarms.

Robbie Conley Architect, LLC
Project Not Yet Under Construction

Robbie Conley Architect, LLC

After the success of Parsippany Fire District #5, Robbie Conley Architect was contracted by neighboring Whippany Fire Company to design a new firehouse for the fire district.

RCA designed a new 20,000 square foot building that will house three engines, two pull-thru engine bays, and an antique engine bay with ample ceiling height for maintenance of the apparatus. The bays are located along the front of the building for easy access onto Troy-Hills Road. The bays are surrounded by the radio room, gear turn-out room, laundry room, decontamination room, and work shop room to allow for easy response prior to a call and a more proficient clean-up afterwards.

The new firehouse contains a mezzanine level that contains house programs, such as a ready room, kitchen, and recreation room within an open floor plan with views down to the engine bays. To allow for quick response times, access from the ready room to the gear turnout room is by either a spiral staircase or fire poles, which are both located in the tower feature of the facility.

The second floor contains the administration area of the facility with private offices and a large, central open office. There is also a large Meeting/ Training room that contains a refreshment area and a full commercial kitchen for large meetings and gatherings. Ample storage is strategically placed throughout the building and within the attic to meet the fire districts growing needs.

This building was designed in cooperation with the Whippany Fire Company to ensure that the most efficient, cost effective solution, for them, was created. The facility was also designed to fit the requirements of the Whippany Village Redevelopment Master Plan to create an excellent fit into the new Whippany Village.
